Tossa de Mar is one of the most beautiful towns on the Costa Brava in Catalonia. Much of the merit of having been named in 2023 as one of the twenty best European destinations is due to its variety of coves and beaches with crystal-clear waters. It is the only fortified medieval village on the entire Catalan coast.

In recent years, Platja Gran de Tossa de Mar has been awarded the Blue Flag for its high standards of quality and services. This international distinction is awarded to beaches that stand out in terms of water cleanliness, safety, services and environmental management.

If you are interested in taking a tour of the main coves of Tossa de Mar, here is a tour of the incredible beaches of this beautiful town on the Costa Brava.

The best coves in Tossa de Mar. A tour of the most hidden ones

Cala Pola

It is undoubtedly one of the most famous coves in Tossa de Mar. It is possible to reach this beautiful cove either on foot along the camí de ronda (just over six kilometres to this blue paradise), by sea, or by car. With coarse sand and crystal-clear waters, Cala Pola is one of the most visited coves in Tossa de Mar during the summer months.

Cala Pola en Tossa de Mar

If you decide to drive to Cala Pola, you should know that the nearby resort and campsite offers parking for guests. So if you are just going to spend the day, you can park on the roadside and walk down.

Cala Pola is one of the arrival and departure points for tourist boats (such as the Fondo Cristal, with underwater viewing). So you can reach it from the centre of Tossa or visit other coves.

As for services, it has a small restaurant with a play area for children and public toilets. The proximity of a campsite makes this cove an ideal place to go with the family.

Cala Futadera

This small cove is located to the north of Tossa de Mar and is ideal for those looking for one of the hidden coves of the Costa Brava, with breathtaking views. However, it is a slightly isolated cove and difficult to access, as it is necessary to go down 300 steps to reach Cala Futadera.

Tourist boats do not reach this beach, so you will only find pleasure boats. Nudism is a common practice. Here is a link with everything you need to know about Cala Futadera.

Cala Bona

Another of the best coves in Tossa de Mar is Cala Bona. Located just 2 km from the town centre, this beautiful little cove has a Xiringuito with the same name where you can enjoy authentic Mediterranean cuisine in Tossa de Mar in a wood-fired oven. A family business that has preserved its essence since 1957.

Turquoise waters, the scent of pine and wild rocks make this place a must-see. If you want to know how to get to Cala Bona, you should know that parking in this cove is practically impossible. Its location under a cliff makes the route on foot (via the Ronda path) or by sea the best options.

A truly unspoilt environment where, due to its small size, it is advisable to go with the minimum.

Cala Giverola

One of the most complete coves in terms of services. It is located approximately 4 kilometres south of the centre of Tossa de Mar. It is an easily accessible cove, so you can get there in the following ways: by car, by bus (from the Tossa de Mar bus station), by sea (it is a regular stop for tourist boats) and on foot (along the Camí de Ronda).

Of coarse sand, like the rest of the coves in Tossa de Mar, it has an extension of 148m and is only 5km from the centre. The existence of a tourist complex means that it offers a restaurant, car park, accommodation and water activities.

From Cala Giverola to Cala Pola, it is only a 15-minute walk, so you can explore other coves if you wish without much effort. Without a doubt, one of the favourite coves in Tossa de Mar to go to with the family.

Cala del Reig

Cala del Reig is arguably one of the coves with the best views of the walled town of Tossa de Mar. It is small and rocky, located between Platja Gran and Mar Menuda. You can access this cove via a small stone staircase.

Depending on the direction of the storms that bring or remove sand, we can sometimes find this beach with or without sand. It is the smallest beach in the whole bay of Tossa with less than 15 metres.

However, it offers a unique experience for those who enjoy snorkelling, as it is precisely in its location that a great variety of marine species can be seen.

Cala Llevadó

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful coves on the Costa Brava. Although it is not directly in the centre of Tossa de Mar, it is a beach that we recommend you visit for its scenery. Surrounded by hills covered with pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation, it offers beautiful views and absolute tranquillity.

This cove is located in the urbanisation of Cala Llevadó, 3 kilometres south of the town of Tossa. With a length of approximately 25 metres, this cove surrounded by rocks is characterised by its coarse sand, crystalline waters and lush vegetation. Access to Cala Llevadó is through the campsite located in the cove itself. You will find paid parking where you can leave your car and also the possibility of staying in bungalows or camping in plots. The campsite has spectacular views and, in terms of services, it is quite complete (it has a restaurant and supermarket).

This is a very popular area for diving centres, due to the richness of its seabed and, in particular, its extensive meadow of posidonias (aquatic plant endemic to the Mediterranean).

Cala Figuera o Dels Rajols

One of the coves located between Lloret de Mar and Tossa. It is located next to an urbanised area called Santa Maria de Llorell, so it is possible to get there by car.

Cala Figuera is one of the few nudist coves in Tossa de Mar.

This cove does not have any kind of service. However, to the north of Cala Figuera we find Cala d'en Carles, which has a beach bar and toilets.

It is an excellent natural beach that is not usually too crowded, even in high season.

Cala d'En Carles

Quiet cove located 3 kilometres from the town centre of Tossa de Mar. It is 80 metres long and has a beach bar and showers. Located in the Cala Llevadó residential area.

Beaches of Tossa de Mar

In addition to the coves of Tossa de Mar that we have mentioned, this pretty village on the Costa Brava offers three charming beaches. All of them are easily accessible, which makes them a perfect plan for beaches in Tossa de Mar with children. With coarse sand and excellent water quality, the beaches of Tossa de Mar have been awarded the Blue Flag in recent years. A symbol that these are the best beaches in Tossa de Mar. The European Foundation for Environmental Education gives this award exclusively to beaches that meet a series of quality standards. Safety, services, hygiene and care for the environment.

Playa del Codolar

It is one of the beautiful beaches that you can find in the centre of Tossa de Mar, so it is accessible on foot from the town. The enclave in which it is located is unique.

Don't miss the spectacular sunsets from this small beach.

Moreover, next to it is the starting point of one of the sections of the Camino de Ronda. Specifically, the route from Es Cards to Es Codolar, a spectacular route that will take you along paths and various viewpoints, easy for adults and children.

The Codolar beach is small in comparison with Platja Gran, but it has a beach bar.

Playa de la Mar Menuda

Famous for its scenic beauty and crystal clear waters. It is located to the east of the centre of Tossa de Mar, and is within walking distance of the old town and the castle of Tossa. It is therefore another of the beaches accessible from the town centre.

It is the beach par excellence chosen for diving, both for beginners and expert divers. Its orientation is south-facing, so even if the tramontana blows, it is not affected.

There you will find what is known as La Banyera de Ses Dones, a kind of natural bathtub from where you can dive.

Mar Menuda Beach has public toilets and kayak and paddle surf rental services.

It also has a beach bar where you can eat or have a drink and the proximity of a hotel also allows the possibility of eating in the restaurant.

Platja Gran de Tossa de Mar

Platja Gran is the main beach of Tossa de Mar and also one of the largest and busiest. It is perfect as a plan with children in Tossa de Mar because of its size and also because of the amenities and services it offers. Restaurants right in front of the beach, beach bar, sun lounger rental service, public toilets.

This beach has a special charm due to the fantastic views of the castle it offers. It also has the Blue Flag, which guarantees the quality of the water, services and accessibility for people with disabilities.
